Age of Mythology: Retold is getting its next major expansion—Heavenly Spear—and Microsoft has shared four new screenshots that give us our first proper glimpse at what’s coming.
The new DLC, launching September 30, introduces Japanese mythology to the franchise for the first time. Expect a full Japanese pantheon, a new 12-mission campaign, and a set of mythic powers not yet seen in Age of Mythology’s long history.

The screenshots shared in a news story, include our first in-game look at Yasuko, the expansion’s central hero, and Magumo, the primary antagonist. Both were teased during the June Xbox Showcase, but this is the first time we’re seeing them in action.
Alongside the characters, the screenshots also show off new terrain and units likely tied to the Japanese mythos. No further gameplay details were given, but the visuals suggest a fresh aesthetic direction and possibly new mechanics aligned with Eastern mythology.
Players who pre-order the Heavenly Spear expansion now will get 15% off until launch day. Those who already own the Premium Edition of Age of Mythology: Retold will receive the DLC automatically.
This marks the fourth major expansion released this year across the Age franchise, following Immortal Pillars (Age of Mythology), Knights of Cross and Rose (Age of Empires IV), and The Three Kingdoms (Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition).
Age of Mythology: Retold also made its way to PlayStation 5 earlier this year, expanding its reach beyond PC for the first time.
With Heavenly Spear, World’s Edge continues to push forward with Age of Mythology’s revival, tapping into global mythologies and growing the game’s scope with each update.
No word yet on what’s after this, but if the current pace holds, more mythologies could be on the horizon. For now, eyes are on Japan—and the gods who come with it.
