Paradox Interactive has officially set the date: Europa Universalis V arrives on November 4, 2025, marking a significant reinvention of one of PC strategy gaming’s longest-running franchises.
Developed by Paradox Tinto under the direction of Paradox co-founder Johan Andersson, the new entry doesn’t just build on the series’ established formula—it pivots away from its boardgame-inspired roots. Instead, it leans heavily into population simulation systems, borrowing mechanics more commonly seen in other Paradox titles.
The change means that instead of abstract province stats, regions are now defined by “pops” (population units), divided by culture, religion, and social position. Prosperity will see growth, but famine, plague, and war will eat away at the very core of your state.
A new era of history
For the first time in the series, the game begins in 1337, the earliest starting point in franchise history. That’s right before the Hundred Years’ War, while the Yuan dynasty is still strong, and before the Black Death reshapes the known world. From there, players can guide nations through half a millennium of history, with decisions shaping alternate timelines.
Key features highlighted by Paradox
- Biggest Paradox Map yet – More provinces and a more accurate projection of the globe, promising finer historical detail and more strategic variety.
- Deeper economy – Provinces can produce multiple goods, which feed into production and global trade.
- Expanded research system – New branches across diplomacy, administration, and military that unlock technologies and ideas.
- Detailed government mechanics – Cabinets, advisors, estate privileges, and lawmaking return in more depth.
- Revamped military – Armies are now drawn directly from the population. Mobilizing too many can halt commerce, while mercenaries remain an alternative. Over time, standing armies and battlefield postures evolve.
- Immersive historical events – From dynastic politics to major world-changing crises, narrative depth remains central.
Editions and pre-order bonus
The standard edition launches at $59.99/£49.99/€59.99. A Premium Edition will be available at $84.99/£70.99/€84.99, bundling two future chronicle packs, one immersion pack, and instant cosmetics. Pre-orders also include a digital MP3 collection of the complete Europa Universalis IV soundtrack—minus Sabaton tracks.
With a 1337 start date, population-driven systems, and the biggest map Paradox has attempted, Europa Universalis V looks set to be one of the most ambitious entries in the franchise’s decades-long history. Wishlist on Steam.
